As Shift4 expanded its card-present payments business into Europe, it needed a leader capable of driving partnerships, supporting acquisition-led growth, and building a regional sales organisation. Wenham Carter delivered a targeted shortlist within one week, resulting in the appointment of a senior executive with deep payments market expertise.

Context
Shift4 (NYSE:FOUR) is a leading commerce and payments technology provider, processing billions of transactions annually across a wide range of industries. Having established a strong position in North America, supported by the success of its SkyTab point-of-sale platform, the business set its sights on expanding its card-present payments capability across Europe.
Challenge
To support this expansion, Shift4 needed a senior commercial leader capable of building and executing its European growth strategy.
The role was central to three key objectives:
- Building strategic distribution partnerships
- Supporting the company’s M&A-led expansion strategy
- Establishing a direct sales motion across the region
After several weeks of searching, the business had yet to identify the right individual and was introduced to Wenham Carter through a network referral.
Our Approach
Because we are specialist, dedicated headhunters in this space, we have mapped the European payments landscape extensively and built the networks and relationships to identify perfect fit between exceptional, off-market talent and the businesses we support. From this foundation, we were quickly able to map, reach and engage leaders with deep expertise in card-present payments, partner distribution, and market expansion.
Within one week, we delivered a targeted shortlist of six candidates, guiding the business through the interview process and helping evaluate both technical capability and strategic fit.
Outcome
Shift4 appointed Ashley Arlott as SVP to lead its European card-present growth strategy.
Ashley brought direct experience from 3C Payment, later acquired by Planet, a business already familiar to Shift4 through its acquisition activity. His background in payments distribution, partnerships, and European market expansion closely aligned with the company’s objectives.
The appointment provided Shift4 with the leadership required to accelerate its European growth strategy and establish a stronger presence in one of the world’s most competitive payments markets.
