One of China’s largest automotive manufacturers, Changan has long operated internationally, with established design and R&D capabilities in Europe.

Its next ambition was to build a commercial presence across the region, bringing its vehicles directly to European customers.

That meant establishing local operations, developing distribution networks and building the infrastructure needed to compete in established automotive markets.

In 2022, Changan approached Wenham Carter to help recruit the people who would turn those plans into an operating business. We became the first international executive search firm to establish a formal recruitment partnership with the company.

The founding teamA European business built from the ground up

Changan’s first European appointments were entering a business that had yet to establish much of its local commercial infrastructure. The company was looking for people who understood European automotive markets and could create the structures, processes and relationships required to operate within them.

Wenham Carter supported the appointment of Changan’s first local employee in its European commercial organisation: an experienced marketing and communications leader who had previously worked with international automotive brands entering new markets.

The relationship expanded to appointments across legal and compliance, HR, market research, product, public relations, aftersales and service operations.

Together, these leaders helped establish the organisation’s local policies, operational processes, supplier relationships and commercial infrastructure.

The founding appointments gave Changan the local expertise to establish its European commercial operations and prepare for market entry.

In September 2024, Changan established its Munich sales headquarters, followed by the official launch of its vehicle brands in Europe in March 2025.

The business has since expanded into major European markets, developing local teams, dealer networks and customer operations across the region.

Those early appointments helped establish the commercial and operational foundations for this expansion.

Wenham Carter’s relationship with Changan has continued as its international ambitions have developed.

Beyond the founding European team, our work has included the appointment of internationally recognised automotive design leader Klaus Zyciora, strengthening Changan’s global design leadership and international profile.
